Sometimes what we carry did not begin with us.
We belong to families shaped by relationships, losses, loyalties and experiences that came before us.
Sometimes something in our life today: a relationship, a feeling, a pattern we cannot quite understand begins to look different when we see the wider system around it.
Family Constellation offers a way of making some of these connections visible.
We rarely stand alone in what we carry.
Understanding
We are born into families with histories that began long before us.
There may have been losses. People who were left out. Relationships that were difficult. Responsibilities taken on too early. Things that could not be spoken about.
What still happens
Sometimes these experiences continue to have an influence, even when we know very little about them.
Constellation
Family Constellations gives us a way of looking beyond the individual story and becoming curious about the wider family system.
It is not about blaming our family or deciding that the past explains everything.
What if the story is larger than the person?
We can begin with what is happening now, and gradually allow more of the picture to come into view.
What is happening now
A feeling, relationship or pattern that keeps returning.
The relationships around us
The people we love, struggle with, depend on or distance ourselves from.
The family we belong to
Parents, siblings, grandparents; including those who may no longer be present.
What came before
Losses, separations, migrations and experiences that may still have an echo.
We make something visible.
A constellation may begin with something happening in your life now: a relationship, a repeating pattern, a feeling, or something that seems difficult to understand.
We may use people in a group, or objects and markers in an individual session, to represent members or elements of the wider system.
Rather than trying to work everything out intellectually, we notice what begins to emerge: distance, closeness, movement, emotion, or something unexpected.
We stay curious about what appears without needing to force it towards a particular outcome.
Sometimes what we carry did not begin with us.
When I first came across Family Constellations, what stayed with me was how quickly the view could change.
Something that seemed to belong entirely to one person could look very different when we allowed the family around them into the picture.
I have also seen this in my own life. We inherit more than stories from our families. There are loyalties, ways of relating, responsibilities and silences that can become so familiar that we simply experience them as who I am.
For me, constellation work is not about looking into the past for someone to blame. And it is not about deciding that everything we experience comes from our family.
It is about making the picture a little wider.
Curious? That’s enough to begin.
You can come with a question, a feeling, a pattern you keep meeting or simply with the sense that something needs attention.
